We think we know what a mentor is: someone who teaches us, guides us, opens doors, helps us succeed.
But some encounters seem to do something else entirely. Someone recognises a possibility in us before we can fully recognise it ourselves — and, through that act of recognition, something begins to become possible.
What if mentorship isn't primarily about helping someone succeed — but helping someone become?
Born from personal experience — and the questions it left behind — MENTORS follows the phenomenon outward, across cultures, generations and radically different lives. Alongside these intimate stories, thinkers and researchers help probe what may actually be taking place when one human being profoundly alters the trajectory of another.

Today mentorship is increasingly framed around advancement — careers, networks, leadership, performance, success. MENTORS asks whether we have mistaken one form of mentorship for its full potential.
Through intimate interviews, personal stories, archival footage, music and memory, MENTORS traces relationships that changed the course of a life. Moving between celebrated lives and people far from the public eye, the film searches for what remains long after the original encounter — and how being seen may change the way we eventually see others.
Each story begins with a relationship: who these two people were, how they found one another, what happened between them — and what changed as a result. Some mentors may still be present; others will be encountered through memory, archival footage and the lives they helped shape.
Rather than setting out to prove a theory, MENTORS follows these stories wherever they lead — alongside thinkers and researchers who help us examine recognition, influence, identity and the complicated power that can exist between mentor and mentee.
